Gone

Today's one and only is a feel good remix by NYC based producer INSTRUM for Monogem and the track "Gone". This track has an easy going club vibe and a track I've enjoyed listening to while being on holidayzzz as it has a fine summer like vibe that I can relax to. Grab a free download via the link below. Enjoy :)

Stay

Australian based producer Empia has remixed Kygo's track "Stay" and turned it into trap mania! Gone is the characteristic pan flute and tropical action, but it has been replaced with a cracking beat and a dope 'get low' kinda vibe. It suits the track really well and it's not overly aggressive or trying too hard...it's just on point. Check it out and grab a free download via the link below:

Up next is a remix by AUGUSTII for Olin Mosaic's track "Key". It's a fantastic upbeat remix, using the original melody to set the vibe, but adding a drop that's somewhere between Super Mario (when having picked up a star icon) and just all around awesomesauce! This too is available as a free download and is almost guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Enjoy :)

Point Blank Music School: Week 7

Week 7: Mixing Basics

  • Sweeps, washes, reverses, cymbals, FX
  • Freeze & Flatten options
  • Session view: set up, extending faders, sizing
  • Grouping tracks for mixing and processing
  • Spectrum analysing: using it to 'see' sound
  • Functional FX: EQ Eight and Auto Filter HP
  • Compression: attack/release, side chaining

So I've reached week 7 of Point Blank's online Ableton course and we've come to the subject of mixing and pre-mastering. However, what makes this week special is that I am actually not at home, but on vacation in Miami. So even though I am far away from home, I am able to attend the course and could also join this weeks masterclass. I haven't yet had the time to go through the self study part for this week, but fortunately Point Blank allows students access to the material for 1 year after the course has officially ended. So there's enough time for me to return to this subject later.

On another note, the course forum is flourishing with great inputs and questions which get answered both by other course participants and the instructor. There are a lot of tips and tricks to be picked up along the way, even for the questions you didn't think of yourself.

Next week I will have to submit my last home assignment, which will be a full and finished track. I hope to share this with all of you then. My work will then be reviewed by the instructor, who will give me a recorded video response with feedback.

Smoke Filled Room

There has been plenty of remixes for "Smoke Filled Room" by Mako, so why do you feature another one I hear you ask? Because it is so good so just have to hear it! This version was created by Canadian producer Jake Brodoway and what makes it so good is that genius melody. Not only is the melody spot on, but so is the sound he chose for it. It's also available as a free download, so make this day a good one and pick up a free copy via the link below:

Lift Me Up

I'm on holiday this week, but I won't cheat you for a good tune! Here's Groovyman feat. Jamie George and the track "Lift Me Up". I mean...If your name is Groovyman, the music better be groovy and it is! Below you'll find a 2 minute preview, but the full track is about 6 min long...just so you know :) Enjoy!

Heading Home

NYC based producer Gryffin, who has given us great remixes for Tove Lo, Years & Years, BANKS, Josef Salvat, Nico & Vinz and many more has reached a milestone in his career and has released his debut single called "Heading Home" feat. Josef Salvat. Maybe you have already heard a snippet of this excellent track in his recent promo video, or you have just been quicker than me to pick it up as it was released last Friday. Either way, it's a fantastic piece of melodic electronic music, with an awesome vocal and a sweet vibe.

Up next is a track by Ark Patrol called "At All" feat. Veronika Redd in the Colin Parker remix. While the original mix has a very chillout vibe, this version is upbeat and more towards a tropical house vibe. This new flavour works exceptionally well and the melody makes you think of summer. 21+

It's a fresh new week and what better way to begin it than with a brand new album release!

Italian disco duo Fare Soldi have resurfaced with a cracking piece of work called 21+ containing 10 new tracks and featuring artists such as Godblesscomputers, M+A, Mc Divine and Sam Sparro. It's one of the most diverse disco albums I've heard in years and it showcases boatloads of creativity, experimenting is new directions, but also staying true to the origins of disco music. I've selected two tracks from the album below: "+21" feat. Godblesscomputers and "Touch Back" feat. Sam Sparro, because I think those two tracks represent this album and what it stands for remarkably well.

For the release I also had the chance to interview Fare Soldi. Here's what they had to say:

1. How did you come up with the title "21+” for the album and what does it refer to?

While we were writing down the songs for this album, we felt that we were aiming to express a wider scenario of feelings than our classic party vibe. The songs were touching adult and complex emotions like desire, regret, rage and of course love. So we wanted to underline this more mature mood on the record, and we chose “21+”.

2. Is there a track on the album that you are particularly proud of?

We wrote the album as an entity of all the songs together, so we wanted them to balance each other.
We can’t say one is better than the others, because our goal was to make them work together, not only as singles. And our songs are like sons and daughters to us, how can you choose among them? :-)

3. From where do you draw your inspiration and where did the passion for disco music come from?

We discovered disco from our parents’ records and when we were kids, listening to those amazing samples used in ‘90s hip hop. We always bring different tastes in our music: indie rock, hip hop, house, techno, but we’re definitely devoted to the disco attitude, ‘cause it always carries good vibes on the floor. So we take inspiration from touring around the world, personal experiences, places, our lives, and then we put everything down on some grooves.

4. Are you planning to go on any tour soon?

It’s 3 years that we’re writing the songs you’ll find on “21+”, and especially last year we focused on working on it and not touring like previous years. Now the record is finally done, so here we are World, you just need to ask. :-)

5. If you could teach the world one Italian word, what would it be?

FRICO, our beloved recipe of cheese, potatoes and onions from our city, Udine.
We play FRICO DISCO, better to know why we called that way.

Gangsta Walk

L.A. based producer SNBRN returns with his third original released called "Gangsta Walk". What makes this one extra special is that it features the late Nate Dogg and one of his unreleased acapella's. The result is a sweet combo of hip hop and what SNBRN calls "Sunset House". I would have loved to hear what a pure hip hop version of "Gangsta Walk" would have sounded like too, but either way this is an awesome festive tribute to one of the greatest. "Gangsta Walk" is out now and available via the link below:

Just Like That

L.A. based Two Friends return with a brand new remix for Pegboard Nerds' "Just Like That" from the Pink Cloud EP they released last year. Two Friends have always loved using a punchy piano sound on their tracks, but for this one they've taken a different approach and the result both sounds dope and makes this release refreshing. However, you're still getting that epic sense of energy and punch that only Two Friends know how to do properly! This remix is part of the official remix package, where you'll also find remixes by FKYA, Rusko, Morgan Page, Topi, Toby Green, Rogue Faustix & Fat Pony and more. Point Blank Music School: Week 6 + Masterclass 6 + 1-2-1 #3

Week 6: Structure and Arrangement

  • Slice to midi: Macro loop compress functions
  • Structure: breakdowns, larger sections, method
  • Arrangement: how parts co exist
  • Arrangement types: songs, tracks
  • Project: Soy Mustafa ‘Red’, Jonny Miller Remix
  • Arranging: delete time, copy sections, als files
  • Tips: fills, Red drums, fill from original drum loop
Only two weeks left of what has been an amazing course so far. This week focussed a lot on how tracks can be structured and how they can be arranged. The self study part showed examples from Deadmau5 and Soy Mustafa and it was nice to understand these concepts with examples from other producers. Similarly, this weeks masterclass was structured around a track made by the instructor himself, explaining the different elements of the track, particularly focussing on the transitions and giving tips and tricks to make the arrangement exciting. You can listen to the track we studied right here below:

For the last 1-2-1 session I decided to get some extra help on my own track (which I hope to be able to share with you at the end of the course). Since the last time I've deleted my original arrangement, moving back to session view. I also needed some help getting a proper bass line added to the track. It's really a luxury to get direct help and feedback on my own tracks and having a trained pair of ears to help me out and for not musically trained people like me, this is a big help.

Bonus: Same Old Sorry

If you follow Justin Bieber or Selena Gomez or haven't been living under a rock, you know that those two peeps had a relationship going and since they are both musicians they've expressed their feelings through their work. While many of you probably have imagination enough for this first part, U.S. based producer Kap Slap has had a stroke of genius! He's combined JB's "Sorry" with SG's "Same Old Love" + a little hint of Adele's "Hello" and Steve James's "Renaissance" in a mashup and created a video story illustrating their relationship. Whether you're a Bieber and/or Gomez fan or not, it's a nice creative idea which has been executed to perfection and the combo between audio and video is just spot on! Check it out below and grab a free download below :)

Drive

Aussie trio GLADES have released a new single called "Drive" and it's pure indie electronica bliss. There's something really special about the bands vocalist Karina Wykes voice and the melancholic, deep, perhaps even mysterious vibe of the instrumental that just works amazingly well together. If I were the local radio DJ around here, i'd pick this up immediately and play on repeat. It's that good! "Drive" is available as a free download via the link below, or feel free to stream here:

Up next is a track by Mothica called "You Will Forget Me" in the TRAILS remix. Never Moved

Tom Misch is currently working on his live album, but to make the wait more pleasant, he recently dropped a new track called "Never Moved" on his Soundcloud profile. It's a really classic Tom Misch track, as it has all the elements (characteristic guitar and hip hop beat) that have become Tom's signature sound. The humming vocal sample that is being used, actually works really well to set the vibe of the track. Tom Misch is giving this one away for free, so go ahead a pick up a copy via the link below:

Just a few days ago I posted Win & Woo's remix for Louis The Child's "It's Strange" and to follow up on that I thought I'd share another remix from the remix package from another MYWLT favourite. Myles Travitz did a remix and it's a completely different flavour. It's more chilled out, with a beautiful electric piano melody and a subtle, on point beat to match. Check it out below! Missing

German producer Luca Schreiner who recently dropped a remix for Roger Sanchez & Stealth's "Remember Me" is already back with a new release, a cover of Everything But The Girl's "Missing. With a great melodic vibe in the verses and a punchy pluck sound on the chorus, there's a fine balance in this track, making it perfect in a club, but also for easy listening. Losing Myself

Munich based producer and DJ Sandy Dae has released a cool track called "Losing Myself" and along with the original mix, there's an excellent remix by Mark Lower. This version has a deep house/house flavour, but where it really marks itself is with it's amazing bassline. The stars and moon must have aligned perfectly when Mark recorded that bass...it's perfect! Combined with all the other elements and a fine groove, this is a winner. On My Way

L.A. based duo Lost Kings have released a new remix for Cardiknox "On My Way" and it's just the perfect uplifting track for this Sunday. It's also the first time I've heard a track by the band Cardiknox and their original is also super awesome. Point Blank Music School: Week 5 + Masterclass 4+5

Week 5: Arrangement and Vocal

  • Recording Arrangements
  • Automation: editing, recording/overdubbing
  • Arrange view essentials, fixed grid
  • Editing audio, consolidation, Red drums, fades
  • Editing midi
  • Free 3rd party plug ins: T.A.L/NI Kore Player
  • Vocal samples and recording vocals

Week 5 is coming to an end, but this has got to be the most important week so far and the culmination of the last four weeks curriculum. Moving from Ableton's session view to arrangement view marks an important step towards the a finished track. It's where the skeleton of the track in progress is constructed and the track starts to come together.

Apart from the addition of editing vocal, there has not been so much new knowledge and technical challenges to deal with this week, but instead it was about applying the skills learned and record the clips into an actual composition. I really enjoyed this process and still learned nifty tricks along the way to smoothen the transition.

For this week there's another home assignment, where I had to create 5 tracks (one 32 bar, the rest just 16 bars) using vocals in different ways to demonstrate having understood the concepts of e.g. beat to midi, vocal to midi and time stretching. This was actually a lot of fun, forcing me to think creatively and work in a different way than I was used to before. You can listen to all my five tracks below:

Masterclass 4+5

As you might remember, last week the instructor had a poor internet connection, so this week there was a double masterclass for 2 hours. While that sounds like a long period of time, I can't recall a lecture/masterclass pass so fast as this one did. Freddy Cuin again spent a good amount of time answering the questions from the participants and showed us cool tricks that were not discussed in the self-study part of the course. Particularly features like "delete time" or "add silence" that I didn't know about before, are going to completely change the way I work in Ableton.

Further Away

DIMES returns with a fresh deep house/tropical style remix for Satchmode's "Further Away" and it's a pleasant sounding piece. The way the vocal has been edited is really cool and gives the track a special vibe. I like how DIMES has taken the best of the original and spiced it up with a clubbier vibe and some catchy elements. Check it out and grab a free download via the link below:

Up next is a remix of one of my all time favourite tracks "Room For Happiness" by Kaskade. Mystery producer Cignature (possibly Audien) has given this track a cool chillout/trap vibe which is really freakin' on point. You might think it would be a shame to chop up Skylar Grey's beautiful vocal, but if you listen to that drop you will understand...it's epic! Bodyache

Thought that was all for today...nope! Here comes the bonus in the form of a remix by LA based producer LIØNE for Purity Ring and the track "Bodyache". The track reminds me of a combo of Porter Robinson and XYLØ...or something like it. The dreamy and atmospheric vibe gives the track a nice feel and works well with the vocal from Purity Ring. Surrender

Gavin Turek and TOKiMONSTA's dope track "Surrender" has received a remix package and one of the remixes featured on that pack is this one by the duo Paperwater. The sound is lush, fresh and crisp, with a nice lead bass sound that's really on point. A nice and easy going house beat accompanies the track and it's just absolute bliss to listen to. Kids Want Techno already delivered a cracking remix of Julius Jetson x P.Keys' track "Richard" and now LA based producer Templeton joins the party with his remix of this cool track. Waiting

Oliver Heldens is back with a much anticipated release he did together with Throttle called "Waiting". With elements of Throttle typical funk, piano house and Heldens' characteristic groove this is nothing less than a proper earworm. You'll notice that the vocal here is secondary to the instrumental, making this more of a dance track, than a sing-a-long track. Give it a spin below and grab a copy via Beatport. Enjoy :)

Up next is a track called "Standing Man" by producer J'Adore. Packing plenty of energy, a punchy bassline and a catchy melody, this track doesn't miss a spot. Pomelo

To me, Pomelo is something like a big grapefruit, but this has nothing to do with it. "Pomelo" is the title of Ben Pearce's latest single and it's a wonderful and slightly hypnotic deep house track. Despite its hypnotic feature, the track still has a great dynamic sound, making the track continuously interesting to listen to. "Pomelo" will be out February 1st. via Moda Black, but until then you can stream it here below:

Up next is a remix by kid for Steve James' amazing original "Renaissance". Kid has really spooled up the future vibe on this one, adding some boost for the drop and chopping the vocal up like a ninja. The verse have been kept lean and simple and that creates a sound balance that comes over just right. Both this remix and the original are amazing, but ideal on different occasions. Either way, you can grab a free download of kid's remix via the link below. Enjoy :)

Feels

U.S. based producer Kiso Armic returns with a remix for Shaun Frank & KSHMRs "Heaven" feat. Delayne Jane. Kiso has made his version more laid back with a cool and tropical guitar house melody, which suits the theme of the track well. In fact, I prefer this version over the more upbeat original and I think the theme is more appropriately represented by Kiso's chill guitar sound. That beings said the original suits Shaun Frank's portfolio of music better. Either way...music diversity FTW...Kiso is giving this one away for free, so grab copy via the link below:

Sticking with guitar sounds...the next track a new remix by Felix Cartal for Kiiara's hit "Feels". Just like the track above, this is a very calming and easy going track. It's a pleasant combination of what the original had to offer, with the addition of a subtle clubby feel. The reason why Felix Cartal decided to remix this track was out of pure love for the original. That's how remixes should really come about! Respect for that. Point Blank Music School: Week 4 + 1-2-1 #2

Week 4: Scenes and Effects

  • Building scenes: capture and insert, labelling
  • Effects: inserts v sends/returns, when and why?
  • Delay and Reverb
  • Creative effects: Beat Repeat and Auto Filter
  • Midi mapping: sends, midi map values
  • Key mapping: toggle switches, mixing desk
  • Resampling: what and why? Frequency shifter

I am officially half-way through Point Blank's Ableton Production Course and this week was all about audio and midi effects, as well as mapping and building scenes in Ableton's characteristic session view. There's been plenty of learning to take onboard. This week I also had to submit a home assignment, applying the skills learned during last week and this weeks syllabus. For the assignment I had to create 3 pieces of music (16 bars or 32 bars) and I've uploaded them here for you to take a listen:

The three clips were all made using Ableton's built-in instruments (apart from a single swoosh effect and a crash sound on track 2).

1-2-1 #2 and Masterclass 4

Yesterday I also had my second 1-2-1 session with the instructor Freddy Cuin. As an active musician, Freddy is travelling around the world. He is basically in another location everytime I see him for a masterclass or 1-2-1 session. It is really cool to have the course taught by someone who's "in the business" and can share insights from the studio, but also live performances. However, this also has a downside as the instructor is less flexible timewise and has to schedule masterclasses according to a tight schedule. As I have mentioned before, it's always possible to review the recorded masterclass later, but it's nice to be able to be there when the masterclass happens, to ask questions along the way.

Freddy was in Columbia this week and his hotel internet connection had serious bandwith issues. I was still able to enjoy my 1-2-1 session and learned a lot, but unfortunatly the masterclass had to be interrupted and rescheduled for next week, due to too much lag and stutter.

Next week is going to be about record arrangement and adding vocals. I look very much forward to that and to receive feedback on the 3 tracks I've made for this weeks home assignment.

Remember Me

Stuttgart based producer Luca Schreiner is the Schwäbisch genius behind this version of Roger Sanchez & Stealth's track "Remember Me". I like the deeper and techier house vibe Luca has added to this track and the pluck-like sounds really make magic with this track. The melody is also really catchy and rhythmic. There's no download or release date available for this one yet, but you can stream the track all you want via Soundcloud. Enjoy :)

Lost Kings are also ready with their first release of the new year. This time it's a remix for G-Eazy & Bebe Reha's "Me, Myself & I" and it's utterly brilliant. Blasé

Louis The Child continue to impress with their unique sound and approach to making music. They now return with a remix for Ty Dolla $ign's "Blasé". The entire vibe on this track is much darker than their big hit " It's Strange" was, however for a track like this it makes sense. The deep, almost grumpy bass that dominates the track is working nicely alongside Ty Dolla's vocal and the more melodic bits that come in later, give the track a nice edge over the original version to say the least. There's no release date available for this one yet, but you can stream it all you want right here below. Also, the duo is set to play Coachella this year, so in case you get the chance to go, make sure not to miss out.

Up next is a remix by Max Liese for Melanie Martinez's "Soap". I still love the remix Steve James did a while ago, but this too is really nice with it's laid back tropical style vibe. Sum Like That

Today's first track comes from Bianca Latupapua, better known as Lady Bee. She has teamed up with Sigourney K and created a dope track called "Sum Like Me". The track is a mixture of RnB vocals and a house groove. The drop is both catchy and creative sounding, but my favourite part is actually the breakdown around 1:45. The synth here is total bliss and the vocal transpose on that part just works really well. "Sum Like That" is out now and available via Beatport.

Up next is cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling" by Charlie Puth, reworked by producer Boehm. With a tropical vibe thanks to the xylophone melody, it gives this track a completely different flavour. It's winter where I am, but I am thinking of summer when listening to this. It's also available as a free download, so grab a copy via the link below:

Morning Dew

Swiss based producer Nora En Pure recently released a new EP called "Morning Dew" containing to tracks. The a-side track going by the same name as the EP has a very upbeat vibe, but the piano based melody has a very calming effect and is also the driving force of the track. Just like actual morning dew, there's something really fresh and crisp about this track that make it a real joy to listen to. Give it a spin yourself and grab a copy via Beatport where it's available now. Nora En Pure will also be playing at Coachella this year in case you have the chance to go :)

As you might now Galantis made "In My Head" available for a remix competition on Wavo, where it's still open for submission. However, why struggle making your own version when London based Suffix just dropped his version? It's a pleasant and laid back sound he has created and it suits the track very well. Particularly the vocal seems to thrive in this environment. You can grab a free download on his Wavo page.

Warm Water

Berlin based producer with Daniele di Martino returns with a remix for Banks' "Warm Water" and with a dope bassline and a housey beat transforms this track into deep house bliss. The upbeat vibe suits this track a lot, adding new life to this track from 2014. For a limited time Daniele is giving this one away for free, so grab a copy via the link below:

Sizzle

Canadian producer Syre is responsible for today's one and only track. This piece is called "Sizzle" and it's a little happy tune with lots of groove and positive vibes. The sweet rhodes and the cool beat are what I dig about this track. It's a very refreshing simple sound and a little different from what you'll usually find here on the blog. Give it a go and if you like it, grab a free download via the link below:

Smoke Filled Room

NYC duo Truth and Lies have released a remix for Mako's "Smoke Filled Room" and while I've already featured a few remixes of this track, there's just so much good stuff going on with this one that you need to give it a listen. The verses are kept rather simple, leaving room for the great vocal, but when the bassline takes over you're left in no doubt. Give it a spin and grab a free download via the link below:

Point Blank Music School: Week 3

Week 3: Music, Bass and Midi Effects

  • Sounds: browsing, tricks, REX and Midi files
  • Simpler: loading sounds, start points
  • Programming bass parts in different genres
  • Compression: basics
  • Simpler: filter, LFO, velocity, Live 7 Legacy
  • Riffs, chords and scales, arpeggiator
  • Racks: chains, instruments, drum racks

It's week 3 in the Point Blank Online Ableton Course and things are getting more melodic. While the first two weeks were reserved primarily for beat making, this week we learned how to use the simpler tool and how Ableton can transform an audio clip into midi, which is an extremely awesome feature. Learning how to fiddle with the simpler tool turned out to be quite easy, since most of the knobs and dials that Ableton offers are somewhat repetitive across the various tools, like e.g. impulse. So while the course gradually becomes more technical, there are times when you can find the time to breath because of the similarities across Ableton's UI.

This week's masterclass was planned just with a days notice. While that was not a problem for me, I can understand if some would be challenged by this. Due to the holiday break, the course is theoretically a week behind, which seems to have tricked Point Blank's online schedule a bit. Also the course instructor Freddy Cuin is a travelling musician with a busy schedule, so a lot of things have to add up and sometimes scheduling suffers a bit. That being said, the masterclass was pushing this weeks syllabus and extended on some area, however I found this to be very good and I learned some extra tips and tricks that is not covered in the course material. Like every week so far, Freddy covers the subjects at a fast pace, but it is still possible to keep up and if not, the masterclass can be reviewed later when uploaded to the course forum.

I have also continued to work on my own track which I previewed here earlier and next week there should be another 1-2-1 session with Freddy Cuin, which will hopefully bring me one step closer at making a nice sounding piece of music.
